Cambodian Information Minister Praises Strengthening Media Ties with China's Xinhua

PHNOM PENH, June 3, 2024 – Cambodia's Minister of Information, Neth Pheaktra, has expressed strong approval of the flourishing partnership between the Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) and the Chinese news agency Xinhua. This commendation came during a reception for Xinhua’s visiting delegation, led by Editor-in-Chief Lyu Yansong, at the ministry on June 2.

The meeting underscored the pivotal role of media in nurturing the diplomatic relations and mutual understanding between the peoples of Cambodia and China. Amid the challenges posed by the prevalence of fake news in the era of social media, Minister Pheaktra emphasized the importance of responsible journalism. “In today’s world, where misinformation spreads quickly, it is crucial to manage public opinion by providing accurate and timely information,” he stated.

Minister Pheaktra also highlighted his vision for transforming AKP into a more dynamic, proactive, and interactive media outlet, and expressed hope for ongoing support from Xinhua in achieving this through capacity building and knowledge sharing.

Lyu Yansong, in response, affirmed the strong media cooperation, noting its role in deepening the ties between the two nations. He shared details from his earlier bilateral meeting with Sokmom Nimul, Director General of AKP, where they renewed their commitment to enhancing their collaboration. This includes bringing their cooperation to new heights and expanding practical news cooperation to build trust between the peoples of Cambodia and China.

During their discussions, both parties acknowledged the significant support Xinhua has provided to AKP in various forms, including spiritual, material, and technical assistance, and expressed a mutual desire to further strengthen their partnership.

The Xinhua delegation's visit, which began on May 31 and concludes on June 2, also includes plans for joint media projects that focus on cultural exchange, traditions, and tourism, aimed at fostering greater understanding between the two populations.

Moreover, Lyu extended an invitation to AKP for a high-level delegation to attend the 6th World Media Summit in Xinjiang province, China, in October, and for an official visit at a suitable time.

This partnership renewal, initially signed in Beijing in February 2023, marks a continued effort to bolster media relations between Cambodia and China, reflecting their enduring friendship and cooperative spirit in various sectors including trade, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges.
